Breaking Down Growth Barriers by Making Therapy Affordable for Clients

Jessica Oliver’s group practice, Aspire Counseling, was up against a wall. Revenue growth was slowing, but Aspire still had the capacity to take on more clients. The problem? New clients couldn’t afford to pay for therapy out of pocket.

“While we offered superbills to our clients, most out-of-network claims were denied,” Jessica said. “The rare occasion when an insurance company actually approved a superbill was exciting, but so many of our clients were disappointed by denials that we just couldn’t give them much hope that insurance would help.”

Aspire is an out-of-network practice. Jessica knew that, in order to attract new clients, she needed to help them access their out-of-network benefits. So she signed up for an out-of-network billing solution.

“We ran into issue after issue,” she said. “We had angry clients when the system didn’t work, and I even lost a staff member due to their frustration.”

Since Aspire Counseling switched to Thrizer, Jessica said, more clients than ever before have been able to use their out-of-network benefits. “Our clients generally appreciate how easy it is to use Thrizer,” she said. “Many are being reimbursed more than they expected.”

On the administrative side of things, she said that Thrizer has improved Aspire’s ability to help clients navigate and claim their benefits.

“Our intake team relies heavily on the benefits checker,” she said. “Our clinical team appreciates how easy it is to bill a client. Personally, I appreciate how easy it is to check the status of superbills that have been submitted.

“I think the thing I like most is that Thrizer empowers our clients,” she concluded. “Our clients seem much less frustrated with their insurance companies since we moved to Thrizer.”

And that may contribute to better treatment outcomes and better job satisfaction for her team. Jessica said that her favorite part of being a therapist is seeing clients make progress.

“Watching their lives change as they put in the work and start to find relief from their symptoms is such a powerful moment,” she said. “To know that I as their therapist played a small role in their journey to a more fulfilling life is incredible.”
