Upcoming Pricing Changes on Thrizer
Read about upcoming pricing changes on Thrizer's platform including what to expect and why it is necessary.
Today, we’re announcing pricing changes to Thrizer’s out-of-network billing fees.
This follows our announcement from a few weeks ago detailing Thrizer's response to the changing requirements for Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plans.
Pricing changes are never easy. Over the past 4.5 years, we’ve fought hard to keep our pricing low and transparent. We are proud that we've only changed our pricing once: in June 2024, we introduced a 1% fee for reimbursement via direct deposit, while continuing to offer free claim support pre-deductible and for paper check reimbursements.
Before getting into the new fees, we want to explain our pricing philosophy and what ultimately led us to make this difficult decision. To go directly to the new pricing, skip ahead to the Pricing Changes section below.
Our philosophy on pricing
When we started the company, our mission was to make quality care as accessible as possible without placing yet another significant cost onto therapists and their clients.
Instead, we looked at ways we could earn revenue from parts of the transactions and claims process handled by players not actually rendering clinical services - think insurance companies, payment processors, and banks.
Each of these players earns significant revenue behind the scenes on sessions through aspects like credit card processing and payment facilitation. Our goal is to break into these spaces, streamline unnecessary layers, and earn a portion of that revenue rather than from steep fees to therapists and clients.
It is a bold idea. Everyone from therapists to partners has questioned how we can run a business on the rates we charge. Between what we’ve earned on payment processing and OON fees from direct deposit and Thrizer Pay, we’ve been able to operate and grow with our lean team.
While many businesses operate with the goal of being profit-maximizing, we’d be lying if we said revenue and profit don’t matter to us at all. Ultimately, they are the only ways we can thrive as a company and remain sustainable for years to come.
Unlike many businesses, however, we hold our values as high as our earnings because of our deep care for the mental health space and the problem we’re solving. We don’t want to be another big tech company arbitrarily increasing prices or cutting necessary expenses to chase an attractive bottom line.
When we charge for something, we want it to be because we are truly solving a problem and adding real value.
Our pricing philosophy continues to be at the center of the decisions we make as a company. But staying true to those values also means building a company that can continue investing in the product, support, and infrastructure needed to serve our providers well.
Why we’re updating our pricing now
There are three main reasons:
The insurance landscape is rapidly changing. As announced, Blue Cross Blue Shield plans have increasingly restricted our ability to facilitate electronic deposits. This eliminates the revenue we previously earned on reimbursements via direct deposit and Thrizer Pay while we continue to bear the operational cost of supporting BCBS claims. In general, we lose money on a significant subset of claims, particularly ones that require our team to call insurers directly (i.e. for claim status updates, provider registrations, and manual benefit checks). Our current fees do not account for these operational costs.
Compliance costs of OON billing and payments are growing significantly as we scale. We operate at the intersection of two of the most regulated industries in the United States: finance and healthcare. As we have grown to facilitate hundreds of thousands of claims and millions in payment volume, so have our legal, compliance, security, and operational costs. This investment is worth it because we strongly believe modern fintech applied intentionally to healthcare can make a profound impact. But again, Thrizer isn’t currently priced for it.
Meaningfully breaking into payment processing is taking longer than expected. Despite our growing volume, our processing margins remain very low. At the same time, to earn a sustainable margin and pass on meaningful savings to providers, we need to bring more financial infrastructure in-house. That process itself requires additional licenses and significant operational investment to remain fully compliant and secure.
We see a clear path to making this a reality and will be making the below pricing changes to enable that journey. We have decided to separate out our payment processing and OON billing fees to better reflect the underlying cost and effort of submitting and monitoring out-of-network claims.
Pricing changes
Effective November 2, 2026, we will implement the following fees for all OON claims submitted on Thrizer:
- Out-of-network claim fee: $4 per claim (previously $0)
- Instant Reimbursement fee: $15 per claim (renamed from ‘Thrizer Pay’, previously 5% of provider rate)
The out-of-network claim fee will be charged for sessions that opt for OON billing support (i.e. opt into ‘OON Billing’ as the billing type). This applies to pre-deductible claims and claims for which the reimbursement method is Check or Bank (when eligible). A $4 fee will apply to these claims.
The Instant Reimbursement fee (renamed from 'Thrizer Pay') will be charged for post-deductible sessions that have opted to only pay the estimated responsibility instead of the full session fee (i.e. opt into ‘OON Billing’ as the billing type and ‘Instant Reimbursement’ as the reimbursement method). A $15 fee will apply to these claims.
With these changes, you will be able to cover a portion or all fees on behalf of your clients.
Next Steps
We are offering a grace period through November 1, during which the current fees will remain in place (including no fees on BCBS claims). This applies to all claims submitted during this period. The new fees will go into effect on November 2.
We understand these changes will be an adjustment, and we will work diligently with you and your clients to ensure a smooth transition and understanding.
We are grateful to each and every one of you for continuing to believe in us and trust us with this important work. As always, we never take that for granted.
