Compare the best billing software for therapists who bill out of network. Save time, get paid faster, and simplify the reimbursement process.

Billing out-of-network takes time.

But the right software saves countless hours and ensures you get paid.

So, what is the best billing software for therapists who are partially or fully out of network?

We reviewed the top contenders, scanned endless online reviews, and emailed with their support teams to find out.

This guide goes through the most popular platforms and tells all, helping out of network therapists make an informed decision.

How We Rated Each Platform

This guide is built specifically for therapists who bill out of network. Whether that’s for all clients or just a few, this guide is applicable.

As such, we did not include platforms focused solely on in-network billing. Every software reviewed here is built (or at least functional) for psychotherapy practices, of any size, offering out-of-network services.

To evaluate each platform fairly, we looked at:

  1. Out-of-network billing features: Can it generate and send superbills? Does it file claims on behalf of your clients? Is it automated or manual?

  2. Ease of use: Is it simple enough for a solo therapist to use without admin help?

  3. Client experience: Can clients access documents, make payments, and get reminders easily?

  4. Cost transparency: How much does it really cost therapists and clients, including any potential hidden fees?

  5. Automation and integrations: Can it reduce your manual workload by syncing with EHRs or calendars?

  6. HIPAA compliance: Does it offer a signed BAA and protect client data properly?

  7. Support and service:  Is help easy to reach, and do other therapists say good things about it?

  8. Extra Features: Does the platform offer instant benefits checking? What about superbill submission rather than full claim automation?

We also factored in real therapist feedback. This includes what people are saying on Reddit, LinkedIn, and in our own conversations with providers in the field.

This is not a paid roundup, it’s just our honest look into the best out-of-network billing software for mental health.

Thrizer

Though I work closely with Thrizer, I’ve aimed to keep this comparison fair and transparent.

From what I’ve seen behind the scenes, therapists truly love Thrizer. And what sets it apart comes down to three core things:

Now let’s take a critical look at how Thrizer stacks up using our review criteria.

Strengths

Thrizer is the only platform that offers fully automated out-of-network claim submission. Once payment is processed, claims are filed with no action required from the therapist or client. Thrizer also stands out for its Thrizer Pay feature, which allows clients to pay just their copay after meeting their deductible. Thrizer fronts the rest and waits for reimbursement. Setup is simple, there's no need to switch EHRs, and pricing is transparent: therapists pay a 3% processing fee and clients only pay if reimbursement is successful. It’s hands-off, affordable, and deeply focused on therapist and client experience.

Weaknesses

Thrizer does not currently offer EHR integrations, which means therapists must manually input session data unless they already track it elsewhere. There’s also no live chat or phone support—help is email-only for now. For some, these may be minor trade-offs, but for larger practices or those seeking all-in-one platform consolidation, it may require parallel systems.

Overview

OON Billing Features: Fully automated claim filing + superbill support + Thrizer Pay copay model

Ease of Use: Extremely simple setup, no EHR switch needed, hands-off once configured

Client Experience: Clients get real-time benefits info, flexible payment options, and transparent fees

Cost Transparency: 3% processing fee, 1–5% client fee, no monthly costs or hidden charges

Automation & Integrations: Claims auto-submitted instantly; no EHR integrations (yet)

HIPAA Compliance: Fully HIPAA-compliant with signed BAA and encrypted infrastructure

Support & Service: Fast and helpful email support; no phone or live chat

Extra Features: Instant benefits checker + post-deductible copay payment model

Overall Rating: 9/10

Thrizer offers a comprehensive and user-friendly solution for out-of-network billing, streamlining processes for both therapists and clients. Its automated claim submissions, flexible payment options, and transparent pricing set it apart.

The primary areas for improvement include expanding direct integrations with EHR systems and introducing additional support channels such as live chat or phone assistance. However, most users are very happy with their email support.

Reimbursify

Reimbursify is a solid option for therapists who want to support out-of-network clients without overhauling their billing systems.

It was one of the first platforms to make claim submission easier for clients, and setup doesn’t require a complete change to your workflow. The biggest value-add is their mobile app, which allows either you or your clients to submit claims in just a few taps. It’s not fully automatic like some newer platforms, but for certain practices, it’s more than enough.

That said, not everything on their website adds up. For example, they claim that Thrizer costs $860 per month for 20 clients at $200 per session. I ran several calculations and couldn’t replicate that number.

In reality, the cost of out-of-network claim submission through Thrizer is 1–5% of the session fee. Plus, Thrizer only charges post-deductible, making that $860 figure highly inflated.

Reimbursify also positions themselves as the only platform developed with clinicians and privacy in mind. That claim doesn’t hold up based on what I know to be true, or even based on simple research.

Both Thrizer and Mentaya were built by people deeply involved in the mental health space and each platform is fully HIPAA-compliant.

It’s also worth noting that some former Reimbursify users have moved over to Thrizer and reported a better overall experience. One example is Audrey Schoen, a licensed therapist who switched and shared her success story publicly.

Now let’s take a closer look at how Reimbursify performs across the 8 core criteria.

Strengths

Reimbursify is a solid option for therapists who generate superbills and want to help clients get reimbursed without a full billing overhaul. Its mobile app is intuitive and lets either party submit claims in under a minute. It’s especially useful for solo providers with a small out-of-network caseload. The pay-per-claim pricing is simple, and there’s no need to change your EHR or workflows.

Weaknesses

Reimbursify doesn’t offer automation. Every claim must be submitted manually, which means added work for therapists or clients. There’s also no copay-only payment option or integrated support for tracking reimbursement timelines. While it’s cost-effective for lower volumes, scaling up means more manual steps and higher fees. Support reviews are mixed, and there’s no direct integration with EHRs as far as I can tell.

Overview

OON Billing Features: Manual claim submission via app or portal; superbill upload supported

Ease of Use: Very easy to set up and use; no system changes required

Client Experience: App guides clients through submissions; status updates via mobile

Cost Transparency: $3.99/claim or discounted bundles; free for clients on higher therapist plans

Automation & Integrations: No automation; all submissions are user-initiated

HIPAA Compliance: Fully HIPAA-compliant with secure, encrypted submissions

Support & Service: Email-based support; some reports of slow or unclear communication

Extra Features: Mobile app is a standout; benefits checker available but no real-time pricing tools

Overall, I rate Reimbursify an 8/10 for out-of-network billing.

It’s a solid, affordable option for therapists who already generate superbills and want to give clients a faster way to submit claims. The mobile app is a standout feature, and the pricing works well for small practices with a few OON clients. But without claim automation it’s not completely effortless.

Mentaya

Mentaya is a well-known name in the out-of-network billing space, and for good reason. It was built to help clients use their OON benefits without turning therapists into billing administrators.

The main draw: Mentaya files claims on behalf of clients. Once a client is set up and session info is entered, Mentaya handles the rest. Therapists can also pay $29/month to access a benefits checker, giving clients real-time reimbursement estimates before the first session.

But there are trade-offs. Mentaya doesn’t offer a fee-float option like Thrizer Pay, so clients must pay the full session fee up front and wait weeks for reimbursement. That can be a dealbreaker for some.

On the plus side, Mentaya is flexible. You can embed the benefits checker on your website or use the service behind the scenes without changing your billing system.

It’s worth noting Mentaya appears to be VC-funded. While that’s not inherently bad, it can influence priorities. A public review from a former job candidate mentioned being asked to do a weeklong unpaid take-home assignment to “see how many patients you could enroll on Mentaya’s platform.”

In my opinion, they get a pass for wanting more users. But to assign that as an unpaid task for a job candidate? I’m dubious. Luckily from what i can tell, it hasn’t impacted the quality of their platform thus far.

Now let’s take a closer look at how Mentaya performs across our eight review criteria.

Strengths

Mentaya helps clients use their out-of-network benefits without requiring therapists to manage claim paperwork. Once a client is added and session details are entered, Mentaya files claims on their behalf. The real-time benefits checker is a valuable add-on, especially for new clients unsure of their coverage. There’s no platform switch required, and therapists can use it alongside their existing billing setup.

Weaknesses

Mentaya doesn’t support copay-only payments. Clients must pay the full session fee up front and wait for reimbursement. Claim submission isn’t automatic after each session; someone still needs to click through to submit a claim separate from billing for services. The benefits checker also costs extra ($29/month), which adds cost without fully removing administrative steps. There’s no mobile app or client-facing reimbursement dashboard.

Overview

OON Billing Features: Submits claims on behalf of clients; no copay option; session data entry required

Ease of Use: Easy to add clients and start filing; no EHR switch needed

Client Experience: Reimbursement handled for them, but full fee must be paid upfront

Cost Transparency: Clients pay 5% per claim; benefits checker is $29/month (optional)

Automation & Integrations: No auto-submission from sessions; no EHR integrations

HIPAA Compliance: Fully HIPAA-compliant with signed BAA

Support & Service: Email support only; limited user feedback available online

Extra Features: Real-time benefits checker for therapists; embeddable on websites

Overall, I rate Mentaya a 7.5/10 for out-of-network billing.

It’s a strong option for therapists who want to support OON clients without adding billing headaches to their workflow. The ability to handle claims on the client’s behalf is a big plus. But the lack of integrated payments, upfront copay support, and claim automation means it’s not quite as hands-off or flexible as it could be. The $29/month fee for the benefits checker also adds cost without removing manual tasks.

Simple Practice

I was weary when I saw “Easily generate superbills” as a feature of Simple Practice’s software.

Usually when superbills are mentioned, it means manual work for therapist or client.

So I reached out for more info and got this message from their customer success team.

Simple Practice supports claim submission. But they don’t automate it. You have to submit each claim yourself after the session.

They also offer the option to generate superbills for your clients. But in my view, that adds friction. Clients have to remember to submit the claims themselves, which often means delays, missed reimbursements, or increased out-of-pocket costs.

In the worst cases, this means clients dropping out of therapy due to financial constraints.

Now let’s take a deeper look:

Strengths

SimplePractice is a full-featured EHR with integrated scheduling, notes, billing, and client communication tools. It allows therapists to generate superbills automatically and submit electronic claims through a clearinghouse. For therapists already using it for practice management, having billing tools in one place is convenient and cost-efficient.

Weaknesses

Out-of-network billing through SimplePractice is still manual. Claims must be submitted by the therapist, and there’s no automation tied to session completion. Clients must submit their own claims if therapists opt for superbills only, which can delay reimbursement or make it more effortful for clients. There’s also no built-in client support tools like real-time benefits estimates or reimbursement tracking.

Overview

OON Billing Features: Therapist-submitted claims + auto-generated superbills; no client-side support

Ease of Use: User-friendly platform; claim submission adds extra steps

Client Experience: Clients can access superbills but must submit on their own

Cost Transparency: Starts at $39/month; no per-claim fees for superbills

Automation & Integrations: No automation for claim submission; everything is manually triggered

HIPAA Compliance: Fully HIPAA-compliant; signed BAA provided

Support & Service: Email and chat support; some users report long response times

Extra Features: Part of a full EHR system; no real-time benefits tools or reimbursement flexibility

Overall, I rate SimplePractice a 6.5/10 for out-of-network billing.

It’s a solid platform if you already use it for EHR and don’t mind managing claims manually. But if you're looking for automation, reimbursement flexibility, or tools that reduce client friction, there are more specialized options.

Therapy Notes

TherapyNotes is one of the most widely used practice management platforms in behavioral health, and it’s easy to see why. It’s feature-rich, HIPAA-compliant, and built specifically for therapists. But when it comes to out-of-network billing, its strengths depend on how hands-on you're willing to be.

They advertise “Quick and Easy Superbills” and electronic claim submission, and that’s true… with a caveat.

TherapyNotes supports out-of-network billing only if you submit the claim. You can either generate superbills for clients or submit claims electronically through their clearinghouse. But either way, you’re still doing the work. There’s no automation once a session is complete, and it's unclear whether the platform helps with denied claims or resubmissions.

In short, TherapyNotes doesn’t file claims on behalf of your clients, and it doesn’t take billing off your plate.

That said, if you already use TherapyNotes for scheduling, notes, and documentation, its billing tools are well integrated and efficient. It’s a good fit for therapists who are comfortable managing claims themselves or whose clients are willing to submit superbills manually.

Now let’s take a closer look at how TherapyNotes performs using our eight review criteria.

Strengths

TherapyNotes is one of the most comprehensive EHR platforms for mental health professionals, offering robust documentation, scheduling, and billing tools. For therapists already using the system, its built-in claim submission features streamline out-of-network billing to a degree, especially when paired with its structured interface and integrated clearinghouse.

Weaknesses

TherapyNotes does not automate out-of-network claim submission. Every claim must be manually submitted by the therapist, and clients have no access to real-time claim status or reimbursement tools. It lacks features like client payment flexibility, automated claim tracking, or real-time benefits checking. For therapists hoping to fully offload billing tasks, this isn’t the platform for that.

Overview

OON Billing Features: Electronic claim submission (manual); superbill generation; no client-side filing

Ease of Use: Clear interface; structured workflow; manual steps required for each claim

Client Experience: Clients receive superbills but must submit claims independently

Cost Transparency: $59/month solo; $69/month group; $0.14 per claim via clearinghouse

Automation & Integrations: No post-session automation; integrations limited to internal tools

HIPAA Compliance: Fully HIPAA-compliant with signed BAA

Support & Service: Email and phone support available; generally positive feedback

Extra Features: Full EHR suite; no real-time benefits tools, reimbursement tracking, or client app

Overall, I rate TherapyNotes a 6.5/10 for out-of-network billing.

‍It’s a reliable platform if you’re already using it for EHR and are comfortable managing claims yourself. But it lacks automation, client-side support, and modern billing conveniences. For therapists who want to fully offload OON claims or offer a smoother client experience, more specialized billing platforms are better suited.

Why Some Platforms That Didn’t Make the Cut

I left several platforms off this list for good reasons:

They offer superbill generation but not automatic claim submission for OON services. Hance, they are not ranked in our article.

Same with Care Patron, who I reached out to via contact form and LinkedIn DM:

This guide focuses only on platforms that serve mental health providers and offer meaningful out-of-network billing support. Not just the bare minimum.

As many therapists know, leaving superbill submission to clients often means it doesn’t get done effectively or at all, and puts accessibility at risk.

Your Billing Software Should Submit OON Claims on Autopilot

If you're billing out of network, even for a few clients, the right software can save you hours each month, reduce client confusion, and get you paid faster.

Some platforms only offer superbills. Others go further by submitting claims for your clients automatically.

When you're choosing the best billing software for therapists, prioritize tools that handle the heavy lifting for you. The less time you spend on paperwork, the more time you have for your clients.
